"Film" on ski boat hull

The first time I saw this boat it had not been in the water for some time. The navy blue hull gleamed like it had just come off the showroom floor. We have been on Falls Lake, a clean reservoir, about three times and there is a film to the water line. I tried applying Turtle wax and there was no improvement in appearance. In fact it just looks more streaky than filmy. I don't own a buffer and they have always scared me because I've seen buffer burn on other boats. It is an older Correct Craft that deserves to be kept as pristine as possible while still enjoying her. One thing I've learned is not to estimate the breadth of knowledge here at BoaterEd. I'm hoping somebody can give me a tip.
 
The lakes in NC, especially eastern / central part of the state tend to leave a brown stain on boat hulls. You get a scum line also which washes off, but after a week or so, there is a brown stain that won't come off without some type of hull cleaner like On-Off. You might try On-Off in a small inconspicuous spot, then wax and see if that does it. My white SeaRay sat in Lake Tillery for about 6 weeks once while our lift was being installed, I tried everything to no-avail before I used On-Off. On-Off just melted the stain away, I then followed up with wax. Be careful if you use it, On-Off is an acid, it won't harm gelcoat, but don't get it on your skin, wear gloves and a mask. Also, keep your trailer wet while you work and avoid getting it on unpainted or galvonized metal.
 
You also may want to try a product called Slimey Grimey. They have a web site if you want to google it. Not sure id Les carries it.

Was looking at your Labor Day pictures. The film on your boat looks white, like it is some fading/chalking in the gelcoat. If you haven't already tried on/off, I would try a buffing compound like Yacht Brite Buff Magic, the come back with a wax like Yacht Brite Pro-Polish. I used to be a huge fan of the 3m waxes, but the new Yacht Brite line is the best I have seen so far. Keep in mind as gelcoat ages it becomes more porous and more prone to staining, waxing will provide a protective coat and help keep it clean and maintain the gloss. If you are not comfortable using a buffer, do it by hand.
