How often does the Chesapeake get fogged in? I'm going to replace my VHF with something better -- is it worth it to invest in a combo VHF/Hailer with pre-programmed fog signals?

Fog in Seattle was a regular occurrence, but in my limited Cheseapeake experience (since last May) I never saw fog, not once.

Joe,

I have been boating on the Chesepeake for 5 years and flying in the area for 25 years. Fog is uncommon, but can last for a day or more when we get it.

Have to agree with Mike. We live off Thomas Point, and if early am fog is present, it is usually gone by 8:30 to 9am. A weird one though a couple of yrs. ago found us at a marina in the C&D Canal and being fogged in for most of AM. The locals were also surprised , due to closing the canal, which some had never experienced.
If you get one, get one of those ones I hear from those ships anchored off Annapolis. They sure are deep sounding, coming across the water!!

Had one experience five years ago just into the Potomac at Point Lookout, where the fog was so thick at 11:00 a.m. that I could not see the bow light on a 19' boat.

It cleared by about 12:30, but it was something I won't forget. Was in late August. So, its not common, but all you need is one experience like that to motivate you to buy whatever equipment you can afford.

We experience heavy fog about once a season and usually early Spring. Last March it was beautiful in the river but once we hit the Bay it seemed like someone put a large gray bowl over the boat. Could only see about 50 feet in any direction.

We went back to the river and cruised around for a while until it lifted. Since we don't have radar, we don't venture out in it.

Hmm, well that's the other thing, is that I don't have radar right now, so I wouldn't be out in fog on purpose anyway. Thanks for the info, sounds like fog happens, just not often.
