Free WiFi for Little Egg boaters reports wanted

Glenn is the marina the one operated by the Lange's in Waretown?
One other point I try and stay off of channel 6 when setting up AP's. 6 is the default channel on many routers with built in access points like the LinkSys. If I have to use channel 6 it is on a sectorized site and it covers the sector with the least amount of users and distance.

Bill - Yes that's the one. I keep my boat there and one of my dock mates asked about what could be done. I looked at a few antennas and routers and sent them to my friend. He was going to speak to Bob Lange about it. I haven't heard back though.

I spoke to Michelle, Bob's wife a few months ago. Unfortunately the AP world is changing so fast and I'm so busy with government work I never got back to them. They are good people and friend's of Spence at Spencer's Bayside Marina.

Michelle is actualy Bob's daughter. All real nice people at the marina. I have been there for years and can't see myself ever leaving. As long as I am not stepping on your toes I might try to help them out with the wireless.

No your not stepping on my toes but I can give you some help and advice if needed.
I just can't do it on the board it would be against the rules.
The advice I gave you above should get you pointed in the right direction. You might want to go over Spencers and look at his equipment. Bob and Spence are good friends. The old Omni at Spencers is no longer used it was left in place as a back up only. The sector panels are inside the lighthouse on top of Spencers.
I think an often overlooked part of most marinas WiFi systems is the boaters that are serious and need the best connection speeds need a "client" unit with an external antenna. At a minimum an external higher power modem should be used. Most laptops built in cards are only 32mw vs the worst external cards are 200mw to 400mw of reverse power. The difference should be like night and day. I wish I had more time and wasn't on time sensitive government work because I feel like I really dropped the ball with the Lange's. As I said they are good people from the conversations I had with Michelle.
I think they will need to upgrade their back haul I believe they only have DSL but perhaps they now have Comcast Cable business service?
I'm at Total Marine from Friday to Monday about noon on Wireless One if you ever want to stop by and chat. I can show you what I am using there at the marina and what I use on my boat.

Bill

Thanks for all the info Bill. I wasn't around much over the long holiday weekend unfortunately. I might go over to Spencers and take a look from outside next time I am down. If I end up setting anything up I might take you up on the offer to see what you have used.

Who has open access WiFi in Little Egg Barnegat?
I'll start Green Bank Bridge on the Mullica, Total Marine Tuckerton and Spencers Bayside in Waretown.
Anyone else?

I'm looking for 3 marinas that would like professional commercial grade WiFi eqipment installed and maintained for free. There is a catch you need to provide the internet access. I prefer Comcast/Xfinity however DSL will do and it must be business class for legal reasons. Ideal locations would be on the South end of Long Beach Island (Holgate), near Parkertown (the land side aka the middle grounds) and one north on LBI below the route 72 bridge either Beach Haven West or on the island side. I am making no money by doing this but it will benefit all boaters between Central LBI Little Egg to Great Egg.
In addition I would like to place a system at Rutgers (the old USCG station).
Les if this isn't proper just let me know.
Anyone interested please contact me on the board for starters or PM me. Once I get these installed I'll start North of the Route 72 bridge and work my way up to Neptune/Belmar.
I have enough equipment to install a dozen high power point multipoint sites.

Bob did you ever get a chance to look at Spencers set up?
How about your marina did you get a system up and running?
Bill

Just an update Total in Tuckerton was upgraded to 2 sectors both are MIMO or 2X2. This has really improved performance. In adddition there is a 5GHz A&N 120 degree sector the air-link speed is 150-300mbps.
This really makes the site's bandwidth and speed scream.
As always it is free for anyone to use simply log on to the disclaimer page no password is needed.

Bill - Thanks for all the information. It looks like I am going to try to set something up in March. My plan is to setup directional antennas on a bath house in the middle of the marina. I'm looking at putting one antenna on each side. This is also where the Comcast connection comes in. I'm waiting to get some measurements of the marina to see if the coverage will be adequate. Did you ever see the marina? Do you have any reccomendations on the router that I should use? Do you think I can get away with a router with 2 directional antennas or might I need to add in repeaters? I;m hoping to keep everything in one place if possible. Thanks - Glenn

Glen give me a call I have what you need .and know what is needed. Never use a router without a legal disclaimer page on the log in, also no repeaters they cause more problems than they solve unless you PtP on 5GHz as the backhaul and then you have to follow FCC TWDR UNII rules. You can call me anytime.

bill, i am slipped in highbar harbor and im sure our marina would love some good wifi not to mention all the folks who anchor in myers hole. i think our current wifi is dsl and i have horrible speed and marginal connections. they also have cctv cameras and spoke of going to ip for remote viewing. i also want to put an ip camera on my boat and my home but havent a clue on what i should use and have been meaning to see what you recommend.

Where is Highbar Harbor?
With WiFi there are many variables one being DSL some marinas are still using T1's if you think DSL is slow try a T1 connection with other users. I prefer a marina use Cable business class internet. To keep everything legal I would not use an AP that didn't have a legal disclaimer page where the users 1st log in and agree to the Terms of Use then are redirected to the internet. Also with high power APs the installer needs to certify the total system power not exceed +36dbm (4 watts) this includes every component in the system from the AP, coaxial cable losses and the serving area antenna gain. This is called Point Multi Point it is in the FCC rules under part 15 the rules must be followed. Recently in PR AT&T was fined $25k for exceeding this limit and also interfering with a TDWR airport radar system.
As far as IP based cameras if wireless they should be used in the 5GHz band or they will or can kill both your RF path and backhaul speeds.
For an IP based camera on your boat I recommend not running that through the marinas WiFi but a cellular router like the Ericsson W25/35, Kyocera KR2 or various MiFi units available from the cellular carriers.
For good radio path speeds you need a unit similar to the ROGUE if your RSSI isn't -75 and SNIR of 20 or higher on the boat.
You can download a free survey tool (Network Stumbler) that uses your computers WiFi card to show you all 802.11 APs and Routers from the location.
So to wrap it up if the marinas WiFi can't deliver -75dbm to the device then the Access Point and antennas need to be upgraded.
The boat also has some play in this because I would suggest a separate WiFi unit be installed on it and it feeds a switch router in the boat for rebroadcast below its deck. This is a balancing act you don't want your boats local AP to override the outside bridge router (masking the land based Access Point).
This all can be done with off the shelf business grade equipment if you are good at programming. If your not well versed then you need Marine Grade equipment Wave is only one of many brands of WiFi equipment for the marina and the boat.
Les has Digital Yaht and Syrens on BoatFix that sells really good equipment as well but you still need the Marina to have a decent business class pipeline to the internet, a professional survey and installation.
WiFi unlike Cellular is not a subsidized industry so good equipment for the AP (marina) and the boat (bridge/router) isn't cheap.
I personally prefer Wave WiFi but Syrens and Digital Yacht are also good equipment.

highbar is north end of lbi near viking village&barnegat lighthouse. i planned on getting my own dsl svc to my slip for camera& internet surfing. sorry but im not very techy
maybe in the spring we could get together at my marina and talk with the folks running things

i know the owner of wally's causeway marina which is right at the causeway bridge, ill talk to him in the spring as he goes south for the winter

realrez, you would be better off with Comcast data service than DSL. It is available in that area. You will find a huge improvement using Comcast data over the Telco's DSL service. Most of the Telephone Company's infrastructure down at the Jersey shore is in horrible shape, it has been neglected for decades.
Bill

Well it is finally here I dumped the business class DSL and had DOCSYS3 installed at the Total Marine AP's. The difference in performance is unreal. Anyone in the area wants to see the system stop on by. Anyone in the area with a Bridge unit like the Syrens, ROGUE or Wave can use it in most of Little Egg. I have a log in page and TOS but it is totally free for anyone in the area to use.
I had to do a P to P backhaul to get the cable modem's data to the AP's but that was completed this morning.
Reports are welcome.
Updated speeds at 1 mile 10-9mbps DL, 7-6mbps UL. In the marina with just a straight laptop 14-15mbps DL/ 8-9mbps UL.
Bill

Glenn there is a new upgrade for the Red Box controller it allows the administrator to watch real time statistics and set throttling conditions. The unit will also send you and e-mail if one of 10 devices in the private IP/MAC addresses has a failure. I can now monitor the system performance from my vessel when I am in range of the system. Too bad I didn't have the new upgrade (it's a simple .bin file) that takes about 3 minutes to upgrade any Red Box controller. I really adds tons of easy to use tools and features.
If you want to see it again I will be here until Monday (5/02/11) early evening.
