Just a heads up for anyone looking for slip space in Freeport. Two guys I know have taken over Atlantic Yacht Haven on Freeport Creek. It is located on S. Main at the foot of Atlantic Ave.

Clean marina with new docks, heads and Sea Tow on-site. Summer dockage, winter storage and service.

Good guys.
 
How is the location ? Safe ? Are there things to do within walking distance ? The "nautical mile" canal didn't impress me.

I am new to Long Island ( Jan, 2011 ) and kept my boat at a private bulkhead in West Sayville on Green creek. I was thinking about wintering it in the water as a weekend getaway, closer to NYC. Their rates were good and Allan seemed real nice and accomodating on the phone.

Freeport Creek is not that impressive either but Atlantic is a very well run facility within walking distance to food and marine supplies.

As for things to do...nothing comes to mind within a walk but I would suggest a visit to see for yourself. There's probably alot within a short ride. Chris and Allan are local and can probably give you more information on this point.
