I really enjoy a story my FIL tells about his days on the lake. Heres a good one:
He's working with this guy, you know the type- younger, smarta**, likes to flaunt money and stuff. A real class act. Well, my FIL being a lifetime boater decides to take the kid out one day on the lake. He likes it so much, that he goes and buys a 30' go fast boat with twins. I mean its one of those capable of going over 70mph.
The kids never owned a boat, never been on the lake but a handfull of times on somebody elses boat. He knows nothing about Lake St. Clair. The first day out he gathers his buddies, wife, and kid. He jumps on the throttle just hammering the boat across the lake, probably reaching the max speed of the boat. One thing he failed to do was look at charts of our lakes and/or ask anybody about the lake bottom.
He gets out to our channels and there is a underwater obstruction us locals call "the firecracker". He sees a buoy (marking the firecracker) and thinks its wise to stay on the left side of it
(sorry, i always chuckle at this part)..hehe.
Well he flies over the firecracker at about 60mph or faster. He cant recount after how fast but was pretty sure he was WOT. Tears both outdrives clear off the transom. Just gone. Before he could say "oh sh**" him and his crew are swimming. Luckily nobody died! Anyways the boat was a total loss.
Its those kind of stories that I can hear over and over and still get a chuckle out of it. I want to go diving at the firecracker and see how many outdrives I can recover [}

Any funny or "typical first year boater" stories you'd like to share?
