Hi, All,

I have an older Furuno 1760 open array radar. Recently the screen image went dark except for a very small (green) circle in the center, and only visible at the very closest range settings(shortest adjusted ranges).

Is this more likely a display fault or an array fault? Power supplied to the unit is ~13.5v, by the way, so power seems fine.

Many thanks for any comments.

As that old CRT radar likely has a lot of hours clocked on it, I'd think a reasonable 1st guess would be a failed magnetron (in the array base) . Magnetrons have a semi-finite life. They were replaceable by techs but best check with Furuno to see if they still have the part and work on those.

That said, it sounds like several other items ( CRT tube in the display?) can go bad:

But you could look at this as a "great opportunity" ( spelled with an $ in there somewhere :D ) to potentially enjoy the great feature and viewability improvements in newer consumer radars since they went solid state.

I sent a display to Furuno for repair and they fixed it and upgraded some software. I was very satisfied with their work. See it they still repair that model.

Sandy, Bruce,
Thanks for your comments. I have a Garmin 5212, too, so may look for a Garmin radar head instead. That may make better sense than trying to rehab the Furuno.

I like separate displays. Really liked the 5212 but I prefer independent radar.

Bruce,

That's exactly my thought, too. I liked having the radar on its own, separate display. I just may have to follow Sandy's advice and $uck it up and get newer technology. Begin able to see trails would be a nice safety feature, in particular.

Thanks again for your comments.
