Garmin GPS Sounders

I am thinking about buying the Garmin 178C or the new 298.

Anybody have the 178C and have any comments on it, good or bad?

I will be using it for saltwater in the area between Oxnard and local Channel Islands as well as some lake use in Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead and lake Powell.
