I bought this 1988 four winns 245 this spring and it had a keel guard on it which was partially loose so when we pulled the boat for the winter I pulled it off and the gel coat on the keel is missing for about 2 ft by a inch and a half wide, what is the best approach to fix this problem, we do not beach our boat so I was thinking to put gel coat back on or some type of a epoxy, need some advice

If you are not going to paint the bottom, then I would repair the bottom and cover with gelcoat. If you are painting the bottom, then I would fill with Marinetex, sand and paint (barrier coat plus anti-fouling paint).

thank you Greg, the only gel coat missing is on the keel and it is narrow and couple of feet long like I had said, but I was thinking I should seal this area with something and then the gel coat, what do you think?

If it's all the way thru into the laminate, then yes it should be repaired properly then re-gelcoated. If it's not all the way thru the gelcoat, then a gelcoat repair done properly will suffice.
