The Kholer generator on my 440 express is noisy. I read pros and cons about the canister mufler size and if a water/exhaust seperator addition would help. Any input? Also, what is a good way to insulate around the generator?

You might want to post this on the engines forum.

Is it enclosed it in a sound shield now?

What is noisy? The engine or the water splashing out of the exhaust?

If the engine is noisy, the only solution is a sound shield which is costly and cumbersome. Unfortunately many if not most small Kohlers are 3600 rpm units and a lot noiser than 1800 Westerbekes or northern lights

For the water noise, it s normally not too loud but you can install a water separator which will help.

One lag thing, make sure the higher exhaust noise isn't caused by low water flow. I ve seen this a few times, there can be enough water to keep it running but not enough to fully muffle the noise

Thanks for the input. The generator is in a small compartment aft. The engine noise is the loudest. I think I will try some insulation in that compartment. I had a gas Westerbeck in the other boat, a lot less noise.

The generators in our 440's are not noisy at all, with no sound shields.

I have the Kohler and have to say I could barely hear it running in the Salon with just the TV on.

went from a gas Onan 6.5 to a diesel 5.0

added a gen sep

no sound shield

The diesel is quieter than the Onan 6.5 gas was, as the combination exhauist and water made a teriffic sound.

Don't know the RPM on thge gas, but this diesel Next Gen 5.0 runs at 2400 RPM with a belt spinning the Markon unit at 3600.

there should be a door into the engine room with insulation on it mine keeps falling off but I will have to work on that this season. I have to agree with the others my generator is not that loud the exhaust is the loudest part. Are you sure you are getting good water flow this could cause it to seem louder and also cause problems.

I started my 10 kw kohler to warm up the oil for an oilchange, fortunately I was back there so I could shut it down right away when the smoke came from the waterpump belt. It looks like the impeller had jammed, it's about 4 years old, when I took it apart it looked ok but 2 vanes faced the wrong way, Waiting for the new parts.

Well, there's your problem. Insufficient water flow will cause it to run loud. I replaced my water pump last year.
