Any body know of a place that rewinds generator back ends Thanks

Not sure what that is, but 2 genny places I know are Sea_curity and Marine Specialists.

It's a 2000 westerbeke 4.5 kw gas 511hrs. Never had a problem

Call Westerbeke. There are shops that can rewind but since it's gas I would be careful who you use.

I will give them a call in morning. There is a few places in Florida that do it. Hopefully I can find someone that does Marine up here Thanks

You can try
Mayfair Power Systems | 347 North Main Street Freeport, NY 11520 | 516-623-3007
Nassau and Suffolk County Long Island standby generator installation, service, and maintenance specialists.

They are a Westerbeke dealer

So can someone explain a rewind to us genny novices?

I'm a novice to.There is wire windings in the rear end of the generator that makes the A/C to power the boat. Kinda like a alternator on the engine that makes D/C for your batteries .The windings corrode and short out.. You can have them rewind the the armature and field windings.

I called Westerbeke they gave me a place in mass in mass. I called them and left message still no call back. If i dont hear back from them by tomorrow I guess its off to Florida. $480 in shipping alone.

i assume you want stator rewound i used a place in freeport on main st it was a motor rewind shop sorry dont know name but it near mayfair i think south of it on the east side of block tan brick front i dissasemble my self brought staor to them was only a few hundred dollars fo rewind maybe 5 yrs ago still working they dont fix gennys but would rewind the part hope that helps

Dave , its just like the windings on any electric motor. the windings are copper wire, lots of it ... That's as short as I can make it . ITs actually what they are saying . he needs it rewound. Back in the day for motors it was huge business. Now like anything else its a dying breed and we just throw stuff away .

Bone354, If I am hijacking your thread let me know and I will start a new one.

A friend of mine with a gas westerbeke 7.4 kw was told he needs a new back end. Is this the same as needing a new armature or rewind as per the OP?
Also he is being told the backend weighs 400lbs and they need to pull the generator, which means they may need to move an engine to get the geni out.

The backend probably weighs around 80lbs. My whole generator weighs around 280lbs dry. The 7.2 probably weighs a little more. Depending on the boat it can be split right in boat. I have a 34' searay with big blocks and it is really tight and I got it out no problem. The hardest part was disconnecting the control panels little screws that attach it to the rear end.Once it's off you can turn the panel so you could see the wires. I had to use a mirror to see screws . I was upside down and looking in a mirror trying to turn screws it wasn't fun. Everything is labeled from factory . I didn't send it yet . The place in Florida refurbishes the whole thing like new. Hope this helps

Ericsil thanks I try and find them. I called a few place's and they were pretty close to the price in Florida that deals with marine generators. They even have a exchange program if they have your model rearend the difference is the added shipping. My armature is testing good but I have it out I want the whole thing refurbished .

found it on google earth about 229 n main freeport sign says ivs motors

I noticed you are in Hauppague. We are on Long Island too. Do you have a local place that would remove and reinstall after rebuild?
