I planning on doing this trip over the summer. 2 weeks is what I have available. I have never been and I 'm looking for pointers as far as where to go marina wise and good night anchor spots along the way. How long would it take?? We're are going to be 5 boats in total. 3 carver 46 my, 1 360 sport sedan (mine) and a 350 Mariner. I was thinking of doing the small craft route.I'd like to stay on the hook in Killarney for at least 3 nights.
Any comments or advice is appreciated.

Hello konig,

You are going to have a great trip. Don't miss Mill Lake and Collins Inlet on the North End of Georgian Bay. Good Dinner available at Mill Lake Lodge, if you call ahead. You can rent a boat and do some Musky fishing in Mill Lake. Killarney has very nice anchorage areas such as Covered Portage Cove. I recommend joining the Great Lakes Cruising Club for access to their Harbor Reports. You can find many, out of the way anchorages with detailed maps that most people do not know about.
Timing is up to you, it takes me two long days to cruise from Cleveland, Ohio to Killarney. I like to get to the North Channel to spend as much time as possible.

Hello as well Konig!!

We have done this trip many times and it is amazing!! I can't help with Marinas as we never ever stop in one. For us it is all about being out of the marina.

There are so many anchorages I can't list them. We would usually run up to say Shawanaga inlet area or Point of Baril the first day (long run but not too bad) and then we would wing it. The small craft route is very well marked just pay attention. I have done in single handed 7 or 8 times each way with no probs.

Our favourite anchorage is Bad River for sure (close to Killarney). Depending on how crowded it is when you get there you can tie right up to shore in a few spots. You can also go ashore and pick blueberries depending on the season, have a fire, and the walleye (pickeral) fishing in the river is amazing (watch the slot size though).

One thing I can say is if the wind is blowing on shore (from the south) getting out of the inlet can be interesting.

Depending on the time of year if anyone in the group has a half decent dingy running the rapids can be a blast. A few years ago we were able to get right up into the river and it is gorgeous up there.

You may have some people say go the Bustard Islands ( bad River is just a bit North. Not much room there especially for that many boats.

Another area we frequent a lot is the Massassauga Park. The sites ( which are great) are only accesible by water and they are anchoring bays everywhere. You can dingy in to get some supplies.

If you are interested in either of these areas let me know. If you do go into the North Channel you can stop in Little Current for some pretty good food that is a short walk.

When are you heading up?

Chris

I just noticed your coming from Simcoe. We are at Doral. Not a bad place to stop before you head up. Henry's is right on the property. If you need provisions though you would be better at BayPort as you can walk into downtown Midland.

Thanks for the input and will definitely use your insights into planning this getaway. We're heading out at the end of July right in high time for vacation..Being the first time out that way I may limit our travel to Killbear/Massasaugua.

Thanks again guys and may our path on the water cross some days..
