Saturday I anchored in beautiful Lake St Clair, in shallow water. As I walked around my boat, I noticed that the fitting where my bathroom sink drains out was missing. It is about 1 ft above the waterline. (28' cruiser, Larson)

When I got back to the marina, I opened up the cabinet and found the sink's drain hose, hanging free, with the plastic (inside) fitting that had been attached to the hull and the outside fitting.

I think I know what part to get- its a 1" 'mushroom' shaped outside fitting that will screw onto the inside fitting. My question- what should I use to seal it?

3M 4200.

No need for the more "permanent", below the waterline sealants sealants such as 5200 or 3M 101, as the fitting is above the waterline.

btw: I hate the plastic fittings. They tend to crack and fail... When I upgraded the boat, I used bronze ( below ) and S/S ( above ).

lucky for you the thuhull is higher up... many builders put them close to the water line to minimize dirt streaks, that's a recipe for disaster!

check the other ones, if one cracked, the others may crack too, usually due to UV, overtightening or poorly supported hose.

replace it with a SS fitting, with 4200.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. One more question- when searching for the fitting, what dimension does the listed size refer to? Is it the inner diameter of the hose?

Dan

Yes, a 3/4" through hull fitting, as an example, is supposed to have a 3/4" I.D. hose connected to it. They are all sized based on the hose I.D.
