I just bought an 83 Mariner and the seller explained that his son in law left fish bait in the fridge when he closed the boat last season. Although he removed the offending bait the smell still knocks you over if you open the doors.

Any suggestions to remove this industrial sized odor are appreciated.

take all the parts out including the ducts and wash and bleach then use an odor eliminating cleaner and finally let dry in the sun. do the same with the gasket if possible. every single surface needs to be treated. Then put baking soda in dishes in several locations close up for a few days while you shop for a new refer incase that process isnt sufficient.

Clean it out as best you can. Then shut it down and leave the door open for a week or so.

pdecat,
Yeah, funny. I have done a few projects over the years that, after exhausting restoration attempts, they wound up in the trash heap. I would like to keep it going, at least for this season, considering all of the other B.O.A.T. (bring over another thousand)issues I'm dealing with. This is my second older boat that was purchased "cheap" as a result of an add stating "needs TLC". What I've come to understand is that means the boat has never been updated nor cosmetically cared for in a long while. I am amazed at the number of early 80's 33 Mariners on Yacht World that have original bridge upholstery. With me performing the upholstery, canvas replacement along with the engine maintenance(hoses, pumps, maybe elbows, risers, etc) I am trying to keep this seasons update budget at around $10K. Wish me luck and sanity.

Most fridges come out easily. I'd do that. Pull it out, take it above decks, clean the hell out of it and let it air out in sun. I'd rather do that than have the bad odors seep into the upholstery down below. A new fridge is a lot less expensive than redoing the interior fabrics...

I agree, get it out and in the sun, you can beach it, was it down with the waterhose, add baking soda, rewash, then plug it up in the garage and see how good it gets. It will eventually clean up, but it will not happen overnight.

put an even worse smell in the fridge and you won't notice the bait smell any more. or, if a new fridge is too expensive, haul the old one up and out for some of that tlc (tough love cleaning).

I have more than I want experience with smelly refers. some are beyond cure but the important thing is to get at every hidden surface take everytning apart nothing else will work. Not much $, just sweat.
