help to mount fiberglass part on mariner

Hi looking for some help.. I just ordered the fiberglass part for over the slider door of our 1987 mariner. My question is whats the best way to fasten it to the boat. On another boat at the marina carver user bolts but Im not sure if they are lag bolts of do I have to get to the back side to put on a nut. Any advice or has anyone had one off?
 
Oh, boy... I wish I had something good to tell you there - has anyone out there done this job before? Can you go see someone with a Mariner like yours that has the part installed and see how it was done on his boat???
 
My 86 Mariner has the pipe frame for a canvas awning instead of the fiberglass. It is not thru-bolted but I'm not sure if there is plates inside to use machine screws or whether the mounting screws are wood thread. I do know that there is at least a 1/2 ply coring where the awning mounts so wood or lag screws would probably work. I'm curious as to where you sourced the fiberglass awning? Care to share?
 
I think that if I removed the teek trim on the inside of the boat around the door frame I could access the back side maybe to get a washer and nut backing. I also have been thinking of some 5200 between the new part and the boat.
 
Not sure what model Mariner you have. I have a 97 350 Mariner that I was on last night and I took a close look at the fiberglass piece you were talking about (if you have a similar model) and without tearing things apart on the inside, I couldn't see how it was attached. I did see the caulk line so I know it was attached somehow within.
If I were you I would go to Carver's website and get their customer service email address and send them your question and make sure to include your hull number and I'll bet they'll send you an exploded view in pdf format. They have always responded to me within 3 or 4 working days.

Carver has a history of glassing aluminum plating in the fiberglass when they mount such items to negate the necessity to remove interior pieces to replace an object. I believe the overhang is mounted in this way.

Are you replacing a fiberglass piece or the tubing piece as used in 1986?
 
Thanks for the info.. My 1987 mariner that we bought last year had lights and speakers mounted where the fiberglass cover over the slider was. It looked like the boat never came with one. After many hours of fixing holes and regelcoating I'm ready to install the overhang in a few months when the boat gets unrapped. Im not sure what glassing aluminum plating is.???
 
it's an aluminum plate embedded in the fiberglass that can be drilled and tapped to accept the screw in liew (sp?) of having to nut the backside that you cannot get to.
 
were did you locate it. i have a 86 32 mariner and would also like to purchase the rear door cover

I'm having it made here in eastern washington. Then I will install at the lake in northern idaho. When its done I will try to post a picture.

Ramsport47--- So if I understand what you were saying - the surrounding area around the door could be a aluminum piece that they fiberglassed and gelcoated over?

09carver, I've never actually had one of those appart, but it would definately fall into Carver's build scheme to be that way.
 
I have an 1988 Carver Mariner with the fiberglass awning over the sliders. I looked at how it was mounted today.

Tha awning is attached with 8 machine screws (look to be 1/4). They are machine screws with no nuts or washers (I reached behind the trim over the door and could feel what was there). I did not remove the trim plate on the sides to see what was in there.

So it appeares that there is a backing plate of some sort in the fiber glass.
 
I have an '86 Mariner and would concur with NHBoatman. No nuts or washers on the inside. Now that I read what others are saying, that would make sense to have some metal inside the fiberglass. That awning seems to be a bit heavy and would like tear off from the weight if there wasn't something there. I have the original manual at home, but nothing in there about that.
 
Thanks for the help!!! I think that I will get som help from afew friends to help hold it up then drill and tap the holes. I should be easy if there is aluminum in there. I will drill a test hole first since it will be covered later just to see whats in there.
