The Abacos are a haven for charters. There are several vendors here and by and large the quality of the boats is good.

We wish the people that rented them were as well.

Last night 4 couples show up on a large cat and the captain cannot get the boat to the dock. He's blaming his "crew" who in reality are his friends. The swearing is loud and upsetting. So I walk over, and start to make a suggestion having helped a number of these rookies in, and the captain says I don't need any help I have a 100 ton license and years of experience. This is my crew's fault. They are inexperienced.

Yeah. I got that message. One of the sponsons is pegged to a dock and the bow end is being blown off the dock.

Several of them came over to our boat to apologize. They called the captain a dick. He is known for obnoxious orders, and making things difficult.

He's a friend?

So the captain comes over and calls me arrogant for offering to help. I say, I get it. It's all about saving your face in front of your friends. But some times you have to suck it up and work with what you have to keep it safe. Remember you are on vacation having fun. It isn't about barking orders.

He went off on me, and thus became the second person I have thrown off our boats. Over many decades now, I have only thrown two people off our boats.

One was a drunk hottie who was completely incapacitated. Her boyfriend was on the dock waiting to catch her. After the catch she stood up and threw up on his face.

The second person we threw off was this "captain".
 
I would have done the same thing, Dan. Occasionally, I'll get complimented on a smooth docking. Always explain that a good deck crew can make any "captain" look good.
 
Actually some people cannot recognize a bad situation and either do a "go around" or appease the crew and work with them. This one totally refused to try anything that would have resolved the docking issues.
The person that left the crew for a friends house grew up on boats. All he wanted to do was hook a bow line on a pole and bring it back to the cleat on the boat. Given it was a cat, all the captain had to do at that point was back down. The wind blowing them off the dock would have been under control.
But no. He had to show off with the "breast line" spring forward and have people jump off.

A genuine fat headed jerk.
 
I rarely help others dock unless there is clearly something which is beyond the captains control like real gusty wind or if the guy is single handling. You can usually see within 5 seconds whether or not helping is needed, desired or even worthwhile. When I see the operator yelling, screaming, barking orders whil staying stuck at the helm it s usually a sign that I d be wasting my time.
 
Another example of why there are only two groups of people that never loose their titles, "Captains and Whores"
 
I refuse to use the title with that lunkhead.
 
Its hard for me to imagine having trouble with a new to me boat and refusing a hand,our charter was a single screw trawler and while quite confident and capable of putting my twin diesel express anywhere I want the first couple days on the trawler was somewhat frustrating, Help me get it in? that was an enthusiastic YES!
 
Yeah,it is always the crews fault. The skipper does not know that he is supposed to let the crew know what he wants & get the boat into position so the crew can do it. At the very least get a spring on & secured so some power can be put on it. Do the pretty stuff afterwards.
 
In this case he was forcing the spring when all he needed was a bow line around a pole to keep it from blowing off. He brought it in, one of them placed a bow line around the pole and back to the boat. He made them take it off and do the spring line so he could show off.
Duh.
 
What I meant Boatbum, is that the guy should have just kept his mouth shut instead of confronting you after the fact.
 
No worries. In hind sight I should have stayed out of it all together. Even if someone is trying to pull out of a slip right next door to us revving the engine going no where, I won't say (after looking at the helm) "you have to put it in gear". True.
