I'll start by saying that I never can remember whether it is Herman and Helens or Helen and Hermans but in any event someone told me not too long ago that the cafe had closed. Can that be. I haven't been out that way for awhile but it has alwayw been a favorite spot of mine for a hearty breakfast and a great view of the passing flotilla of craft. mY first isit there was almost 55 years ago......boy that'll sober you up a bit.

Yeah, we miss the "old" Herman and Helen's.

We used to rent their pontoon boat for our pickup camper. Too much fun!

They used to have a bottom scrubbing business there and I would take our boat there twice a season for a "scrub-down". It really worked!

Good times!
 
I floated by there this past Friday.. There was a closed sign in the window of the store. I did see some cars in the area and a 50 footer or so tied up to what may be a guest dock. It, the docks, still look clean though.
 
Like so many, they are probably upside down on their mortgage and business is probably waaaay down. They will have a tough time making it unless they are unusually well funded.
 
Hate to hear all of that. I remember that place years ago on Saturday mornings. All the folks pulling their supply wagons down to the houseboats, lots of young people giving some last minute instructions to people who had no idea how to run a houseboat, the cafe jamming and folks having their famous breakfast burrito...it was a jumping place in those days. I sure hope it doesn't go away all together. I am sure no one around no will remember but when my brother and I were 6-8 years old we used to go there with our family and rent a large houseboat fixed to the levee just north of the store and boat rental. The house boat was either tied up or secured to the bank and bottom and they used to rent it out. My brother and I would fish all day in a rental boat then at night we would sit on the docks at night and fish for carp with dough balls. Lots of fun and it is probably responsible for my lifelong addiction to the old swamp.

The cafe was still closed last weekend and the marina was very quiet. The fuel docks were open though ... gas was $4.49 a gallon (OUCH!)

Probably because they still have fuel left over from the summer when the prices were at their peak.
 
Usually the Cafe opens up for summer weekends only. At times the fuel can be competitive, but not often.

Actually the price for fuel in Discovery Bay wasn't too bad a couple months back. It was $2.60 for regular unleaded. Which leads me to believe that they actually do move their fuel down there. But in places where the cost of fuel is still at the record high prices of summer? That stuff has been sitting there for awhile and probably isn't that good for your engine.

I got 89 octane gas at Russo's/Hook, Line and Sinker gas dock for $2.599. The price usually stays about the same all summer long and it is not old. They have Bass Tournaments almost every weekend and those bass boats suck up the gas!

Man, I remember the old Herman & Helens. They had a Fleet of Delta destoyers, and they also had a great hamburger! And a good taco? Or is my CRS setting in...

But yes, it was always stop in the good ole days.
 
We happened to meet the new H&H owner at VWM. A really nice guy who is an oral surgeon. He had lots of big plans for updating and improving the marina including new dry covered storage and such. Then the bank denied his loan due to the economy fiasco. So he laid off all but one person and is spending no money on the project. If he manages to get his financing in order before it is too late, I think he will go back to implementing his plans for new and improved H & H
 
There used to be a big liveaboard crowd at the surrounding docks. Haven't seen them in ages. Guess they were asked to leave. Had some friends who rented one of those delta destroyers - an apt name. They sure were glad they spent the extra $7 for insurance after misjudging their canvas height and the height of a bridge!
