Have any of you ever dealt with Highway Marine, in Quakertown, PA? Was it just me, or are they rude and obnoxious to everyone? I can tell you, from my perspective, after using all the value of a gift certificate (a gift), I'll never walk into their establishmnet again!

YES! Highway Robbery Marine, I call them. The techs were rude to me as well when I had my old 18 footer serviced there. They charged me $1200 to pull a spark plug out of the head after I injested water once. Told me it was going to be a $500-$600 job, then I get hit with $1200. They said it was all labor, and they ran into "problems". Told me I must not have winterized it right (what?), and that's how it injested water (in July, after using the boat for the first half of the summer with no problems).

I'll never go there again. What were you guys doing way up there?

They also had a promotion at the Phila boat show this year - Win a free boat. You had to fill out the form, and then show up at THEIR STORE a week later between 1PM and 3PM, and they would give you a key to a boat, and then you could try to see if it fit. Had to be THERE to win, not at the boat show. What a scam.

I saw that scam at the Ft. Washington show also... filled a few cards out with "creative" names, a week later, the mail started coming in!! LOL

My wife, trying very hard to surprise me on my birthday, got me the Gift Certificate from there (she lived in Quakertown, we were married last August) since it was close to her house and we were always up there. When I went in, the attitude started since I wasn't buying a new boat..

After browsing the "ships store" for over an hour, trying to find something to buy (trying very hard since most of the stock was towables and trailering accessories), and not EVEN coming close to the $200 value, I decided to drop the few things I picked up and went to the counter. After waiting in line, I asked the counter guy if he could order some fenders for me (I wanted green, all he had was white, they don't stock green), he looked at me like I asked to make love to his wife! I explained I saw their sign saying "to ask, and we'll order it" along with a "we beat anyone's price", his reply was ... if it ain't in the store, we ain't got it! I asked if he could order them, and was told to come back on Monday when the Manager was in.

Completely pissed off now, I asked him to "cash out" the card. Again with the "wife look"... again told to come back Monday. Then I got clever and said, "can I make a deposit on a new boat?" His eyes lit up!! As he was making out the form, asking me what make and model, I said it didn't matter, I was just going to get back in line and ask for my deposit back, IN CASH. I was asked to leave. SCREW HIM!

So I called on Monday and asked for the Manager, was transfered, and guess what... sounded like the same guy! Was told to come in and they'll order whatever I'd like. Super pissed off by now, I had my wife go in a few days later and order the fenders. They'll be in this week. Then I'll have her pay for them. She'll leave, come to the car, and I'll go back in and return them!

When I'm done, and it will be on a Monday, and I'll ask for the real Manager, they'll have three green fenders in stock!

Sorry for the long thread, but they SUCK!

I have dealt with them before and have has very good treatment from them, didn't buy any boat from them but they took me out on their 31'Bayliner for a free sea trial twice, if I'm in the market for a Bayliner, I'd go back there.

Seems like you may have been trying to scam them.

... filled a few cards out with "creative" names, a week later, the mail started coming in!! LOL

I have been in the store several times and like DeeVee, I haven't experienced what you described either.

DeeVee, interesting. I asked for a trial on one of their Crownline bowriders a few years ago, and I guess I didn't look like a serious buyer, because the sales rep said they didn't give out free trials, but they would be glad to go with me on my first voyage AFTER I bought the boat for a small fee.

No Scam, not at all. I was given a card for a raffle "chance" and had to fill out a card with personal info... I NEVER DO THAT. The my g/f asked to do the same. Mind you, this is while we were in line to get into the show.

Glad you are pleased with them, that was the reason I asked. Like you, I reward good service/pleasent relations with my business. No sense in trying to make my point... bad business = no further business from me

But I've decided to eat the card. I'm just gonna take my order home with me this week.

Mike:

Does your wife know that you have a girl friend and that you took her to the Ft. Washington Boat Show this year?

In your second post you said, "My wife, trying very hard to surprise me on my birthday, got me the Gift Certificate from there (she lived in Quakertown, we were married last August) since it was close to her house and we were always up there. When I went in, the attitude started since I wasn't buying a new boat.."

Then you go on to say in your last post....."No Scam, not at all. I was given a card for a raffle "chance" and had to fill out a card with personal info... I NEVER DO THAT. The my g/f asked to do the same. Mind you, this is while we were in line to get into the show."

After your wife gave you the nice birthday gift, are you two-timing her? Maybe that's why you were having so a hard time at Highway!!!!!!

Well I hope you enjoy those green fenders more than your experiences at Highway Marine.

Nah... not at all BSskier,

The boat show was several years ago, when she WAS my g/f, probably 2004. She (Susan) is my wife of just over one year now. I'm a very lucky guy, very happy to have had her find me.

BTW - Ft. Washington hasn't been an Expo for at least two years, just offices now.

Don't know what I did to deserve your cycinism, I'll just take it in stride and assume you were just teasing. If not, perhaps this discussion between us should just end here.

Ft. Washington was close for 2-3 years(may be more) ago, they moves all of their shows to Tilghman Square Center, they are not as big as Ft. Washington though, decent show for small cruisers/bowriders/jetskies and fishing boats.

Mike & Susan, my experience with Highway Marine was couple(or more) of years ago, I don't know if any changes in management or not but I'm still receiving their boatshow flyer. The free sea trial of the 31 footers were from the special run promotion down at Chesapeake River, I donot remember if that came from Highway Marine or from Bayliner, they (Highway Marine) know I'm in the market for a bigger boat and set me up(as a group)for a free run twice. At that time, I don't think they carried any Cronwline boats yet.

I appreciate your comments DeeVee... Yeah, Ft. Washington was a little "dumpy", but it was a good show.
I'm happy you had a good experience with Highway, don't know about the management, but I do know what happened to us. The whole reason I asked was to get a feeling from boaters around here what they thought... good AND bad. Maybe they prefer to cater to new boat sales more than supporting existing owners, I can understand that. But believe me when I tell you, walk into their ships store... I challange you to find stuff (aside from towables and trailering stuff) that would interest you. Bad choice on my wife's part, and we'll live and learn.

Mike n Susan, I have stopped in Highway Marine a few times before buying my boat and was not all that impressed either. I am in Willow Grove also by the way.

Unfortunately, they're the only game in (or should I say "near") town. I bought my boat from a dealer in West Chester. Takes me an hour to get there. There's a West Marine in Bensalem, takes about 45 minutes to get there. Q-town is only 20 minutes away.

Mike:

I have been busy and away from the board but, I wanted to just get back to you and let you know I was just teasing, so please take it that way. I am sorry if it didn't appear clear. Too bad you don't need a towable, as I agree they have had a good supply when ever I have stopped in there.

There was a sales guy that I spoke to a lot, that from what I was told, is no longer there. Maybe things are changing as I haven't been there in a while.

Thanks Skier...sometimes things are hard to interpret on the boards... NO HARM, NO FOUL...

Perhaps things have changed over time there, I just know what happened to us.

Hope you have an enjoyable season, or what's let of it!
