As many know, the shop that has my boat wanted to much $$$ to fix or replace my engine, so I'm bringing everthing home this week. 1999 GM 454 mpi, Bravo III.
I have to lift the motor off a utility trailer, secure it somewhere until I'm ready to drop it ( or a new motor) back into the boat. I may get a new longblock, and move everything from my block to the new one.
Do you guys prefer putting motors on stands? Or workbenches? Or carts/dollies? I guess I will need two?
As far as hoisting the engine back into my boat, what are my options? I was planning on using a 4 ton cable puller ( come-along) to lift the motor from the stand, then pull the boat underneath, and then lower the motor. What do I need overhead to support this 1,000 lb motor? My garage has 2x6 ceiling joists running overhead, about 20 feet long. The are sitting on top of the wall frames at each end. Is this enough to support the weight of a big block?
I tried out my hoist last night, with an old crank shaft, to get an idea how it worked. Lifting was very easy and steady, but lowering was quite a chore.
How do I store the outdrive, until it's ready to go back in? I've never seen one laying on it's side, so should I assume it has to be stored vertically?
