My starboard engine won't go past about 2800-3000rpms. It goes higher when the water's calmer or there is less of a load.
History: This started last season. Since then, I pulled the intake manifold and one exhaust/head off the engine. There was a stuck spark plug and I was wondering if this caused the problem so I pulled the head to remove the plug. This plug looked good as if it was firing and fixing it made no difference. I also changed both thermostats to 160 since they were running at 120 and below. The starboard engine only goes to 140 while the port goes up to 160 degrees as expected.
In the beginning of this season, the engine would come to life after a while or running and go past 4000rpms. This confused the heck out of me why it would work sometimes and not others.
Elec - I changed the coil, dist cap and rotor. I checked and double checked the wires (fairly new). I looked at the distributor advance springs and they looked good. Checked timing at idle.
Fuel- New water seperator, removed and inspected pick-up screen and the mesh filter at the carb. I do not have a "check-valve"(name escapes me now) in the fuel line. Blew through the rubber hose. Today I swapped carbs with port, starboard is still the problem. I changed the fuel pump and removed the fuel flow meter...no difference.
Mech - Linkage looks good, carb plates open as expected and verified by swapping.
Here's what I have not done: Re-change the fuel/water seperator and a compression check. Considering I draw from the same tank, I don't think it's a fuel quality issue. Also, considering she does (used to) come up to speed eventually, I didn't think a compression check was worth it.
Any other ideas? Could it be water temp related? I can't for the life of me see why the engine used to come alive after a while(FYI - it would then die again when I came off plane)
