Wasn't there a thread about someone building a generator out of a lawn mower? James and I need one for the boat but don't have a lot of money. I'm thinking of taking on this project over the winter. Obviously I wouldn't run this inside the engine compartment, but it could fit nicely on the swim platform. Has anyone every really tried building one of their own?

yep Bob. One of his last threads--might be the reason he's gone.

First you will need to find a 120V 60 Hz alternator.

Why don't you ask one of your long lost Wisconsin relatives for one. http://www.kohlerpower.com/marine/sectionfront.htm?sectionNumber=13461 [:-angel]

No such luck. Uncle John and my great grandfather had a falling out in 1921 that put a rift in our family for almost 100 years. That SOB David is my 5th cousin, and he's a rat bastard.

I didn't think you were around here for that Lawnmower thread George?..

The reality is this thing is a 12 volt alternator with a small inverter. You would be just as well off to get a high amp bolt on Balmar alternator, wwith a big or couple big batteries with an inverter. When the batteries get down, start the engine, run it for 30 minutes and shut it down. You would also be able to run a bigger inverter. Safer that this POS design too.
