I put the boat away this fall (the former "Starry Night) and had daydreams about getting it back into the water in the spring. Shortly after haul-out, I decided to partially gut my house and start a remodel. I have been a dedicated weekend warrior for the past 3 months. I was so happy with my progress that I was thinking about leaving the boat out for a season since my projects to improve it will not be done before launch.

Thankfully, I remembered I left some tools on the boat that I needed for a project. On Saturday, I made my way to the boat to retrieve them. I am happy to say that this short visit has changed my mind. Screw the house, it will get done when it gets done! It's too cold to install my patio doors so I think I am heading to the boat (heated) for the weekend to start some projects there (I am really trying to avoid the taping and finishing on drywall....yuck!).

I am going boating!

Glad to see you are feeling better. Your illness was scary.
 
Glad to hear I'll be seeing you and your new boat in and around Sandusky and the Islands area!!
 
Don't ever say screw the boat again, We'll send the guys in white coats to get you. And I feel your pain on the house thing two more weekends of honey-do's and I'm done for another winter. Lets get ready for the boating season :)

Got my can of Flitz, new brushes for the buffer, and plan on washing and buffing the boat all day tomorrow!

Robert, "Starry Night" is coming off (sorry). Do you remember if it was vinyl or painted on? That way I can take the appropriate things with me tomorrow.

Its vinyl, A heat gun should take it off, or you could use that vinyl spray remover.

What is this "vinyl spray remover" of which you speak????

I need to remove some 22 year old striping from my 2757, and MAN did they use good adhesive back then...the heat gun doesn't even take them off (easily). It took 2 hours to take off a 2' section.
 
Ken, have you tried the 3M Graphics eraser on your electric drill?
 
When I took my graphics off, I used a wheel similar to what Gregory S speaks of. But I bought it on eBay. It wasn't a 3M brand though. It is about a 4" dia wheel, and is reminiscent of those gum erasers you chewed in grade school. You should be able to find one at any well stocked automotive paint shop.

Even my wife was removing the striping.

You have to get used to the wheel or you can burn the fiberglass. Use a light touch until you get the hang of it, then it will go quick and easy. We did the boot stripe on the whole boat in about 2 hours.

Very sorry to tell you that the boat is no longer "Starry Night". It is un-named, un-numbered, and un-believably clean compared to when I got it. I will be naming it in the spring and also putting the OH numbers on it.

I used some "decal remover" and a pretty cool plastic razor blade (just like the metal ones, but plastic). It worked fine for the NJ numbers and tags. The name just didn't want to come off though. I used the same method, then goo gone, then a heat gun, and no luck. Finally, I very carefully used a razor blade and it took off the vinyl and left the glue behind which goo gone took care of. The blade worked extremely well but I did make one small knick in the gelcoat but it will be an easy fix when I go about eliminating some of the other knicks and dockrash.

I used a couple of jars of "bar keepers friend" on the nonskid and it is as white now as when you owned it. I could hear her gasping with pleasure since she has probably not seen a bath since you delivered her on your trade in. I started buffing and the blue strips is coming out pretty well. The hull shines like new and she is getting ready for water.

My helper kid and I are going to go there tomorrow and start on the cockpit. Going to also use Mop&Glo on the nonskid as a friend of mine has had really good luck with it and it lasts a long time without yellowing. Also, the rebuilt companion bench frame is coming tomorrow for a fitting so it can get finished up.

I still plan to pop the cabin windows and re-seal them, refinish the dash area, and have the canvas repaired then the exterior is done for this year. Ohh, I also have to install the sidebar liquor dispenser!

Will keep working on it till it reaches 40 or above as I can't install my patio doors on the house until then.

You have your work cut out for you it seems! One thing, DO NOT USE MOP&GLO on the boat. Do yourself a favor and buy some woody wax non skid wax. Easy to put on and reapply throughout the season and doesn't have any ill effects. The mop&glo will yellow over time and start flaking.

For vinyl names you can use "Sticker Off"

For striping I have used 3M product.
