Going to Newport RI last week of July but I had a thought that maybe we would stay in Jamestown for a night or two because we have never been there. Anyone no a good marina and is there anything to do there. shops, food walk to a beach. If you have any info that would be great. Thanks

Jamestown is nice with a small mainstreet and a couple of good restaurants. The only Marina option in town is Connanicut Marina. It is almost direclty accross from Ft Adams as you leave Newport Harbor. They have transient slips and moorings facilities are clean and it's right next to main street. You could also stay in Dutch Harbor on the West side of the island. It's a pretty harbor and their are transient moorings available. Not sure about slips. From there it's a mile or more walk to town.

To be honest I'm not crazy about Jamestown as a boating destination. The harbor where connanicut marine is is very open to anything but the E and SE so any other wind direction is exposed. Also, there's a fair amount of boat wake between traffic and the marina's launch service so even a the dock you roll around a bit. And there's much more action in Newport which is right accross the channel so I would just as soon stay there if I'm in the area. If you've never been it might be worht a night. Enjoy...

GAJ, I suggest staying in Newport and taking the shuttle over to Jamestown for the day. The Jamestown/Newport ferry runs right out of Newport harbor and brings you right into the "downtown" area of Jamestown. Another suggestion depending on whether you have your own dinghy and what size it is would be to dinghy over to Jamestown. With the right conditions it's an easy ride. I've done it just to go grab ice cream on the other side. I would not suggest this with a small dinghy or motor.
Jamestown is nice but there is not much to do. Also, as Prospective mentioned the marine there is very open to the wind and wakes. you'll be rocking and rolling all night.

I've heard enough. We are staying 3 nights in Newport and then off to Block. I'll take your advice and take the ferry over for lunch one day and check Jamestown out. I'm glad I posted this because we don't like to rock and roll at night. Again thanks for the info.

I'll back up what Prospective states. Jamestown is better visited by Car. There are some nice parks and views there with the rocky shore line and cliffs, just not a great place for boats. Dutch Harbor is the better location for water conditions, but it's pretty much a quiet anchoragemooring place to hang out in.
