I have been on record about my feelings about fisher guys that tie up to markers, fish in the center of the channel, fish in front of my boat at my slip, etc.,

Well they still amaze me. I have a sales rep that works for me who is an avid (amateur) fisherman. He will take is Mazda car (not a company car) out on Lake Simcoe for ice fishing and drive it over pressure cracks et al as an example.

Last week I find out he had to be rescued by the Coast Guard when his engine broke down on his 16 foot fishing boat.

He ended up floating for 10 hours after calling on a cell phone waiting for the coast guard (who were busy on more life threating calls I assume and who are also not a tow service (who he should have called in the first place)) who finally showed up at 10 PM at night. He ended up back at the dock at around 5 AM.

Here's the kicker. He was 13 miles (!!!) off shore in Lake Erie in that 16 foot aluminum boat with a friend and his 2 year old on board fishing.

I asked him if the Coast Guard ripped him a new one and try as I might, he couldn't understand given the vessel he was in that this was a/plain stupid and b/ about as unsafe as it gets, both for him and his 2 year old ie: for those who know boating in Lake Erie, it can wipe up pretty good without too much warning.

His idea of being safe was he had life jackets on board.

Go figure.....

I would probably call a friend before I'd call the CG. Although with a two year old on board I'd be calling everyone I could think of ...except the 2 year olds mother...

Greg

I agree 100% with you, that guy is a potential darwin candidate. Reminds me of someone else on boatered who thinks taking a bowrider to Block Island or traversing an ocean inlet in the same boat is a "safe" thing to do. Although to be fair he may have finally started to see the foolishness in his ways.

Always amazes me how much people are willing to push the envelope sometimes.

That kind of boat couldn't take some of the wakes out there, let alone a storm.

He doesn't need to CG to do anything to reprimand him- they just need to inform the child's mom and I would be willing to bet that he would never do something like that again! A mad mamma is a force to be reckoned with.

The story begs the question ... is he a good sales rep?

Don't answer that Greg ... ;-)

Im amazed at some of the small boats going in and out of Lake Michigan on days that I wouldn't consider taking my 32' Regal out. They are either really good captains or really lucky to be alive.
