So I need to add direcTV to the boat and my choices seem to be ether a KVH TV3 or a Intellian i3-Quotes seem to be close enough the $'s are not part or the decision.

Any and all feedback is welcome

Intellian I2 here and having issues right now.
I liked Intellian because you can bring your own box.
KVH has to use their box.
I have a box that allows me to record and pause with Intellian but I am having issues and not sure if its LNB or firmware upgrade.
Intellian customer support is excellent though and they will connect with teamviewer and diagnose any issue and upgrade firmware for free.

With some KVH you can use standard directTV receivers, you don't have to use theirs

At the time I first bought in 2008 all the units for a 40' boat from KVH required their box.

There is a trade off there as you have to buy the box seperate for the intellian but the nice part is you can buy the box you want and I wanted to be able to record tv with a dvr.

I gave up on DirecTV because they require some high end antennas to get HDTV. You really want both bands capability if you want HD with DirecTV. Ka and Ku.

We ran with DISH on the RV for that reason. If you want HDTV review the HD compatible antennas for DirecTV.

Then, if you are considering a run to the Southern Bahamas (and you have the boat for it), review the coverage maps for both carriers.

We had pretty good DirecTV all the way to Staniel Cay. After that it was sketchy and channels started dropping off.
I have no idea how well DISH works in the Bahamas.

HD7 might be best.

Andy,
Like Dave, I too have the I2, 6 years all works fine. I bought it because it was way less expensive than other options. Very happy with my choice. But with that said, it is not HD, and that purchase was 6 years ago. I could care less about HD, but others may like HD. As Dave mentioned, their support (know from Dave) is excellent! Six years (my purchase) is a long time in the technology arena, just saying I don't know what newer units offer. Let us know what you get and why, there may be a day I need to replace mine, hope not :)

Dan, Dave, Walter

I to can care less about HD on the boat and so it’s a non issue for me

I have been lucky enough to find a new Gal in my life and she is an NFL Junky

DirecTV has better options for NFL so that’s where im going

It looks like Ill be going for the Intellian i3
& I hope it serves me as well as it has for you guys
Thanks for all your feedback

My last boat had a compactor, the present one does not. I miss it. It was great for weekends on the hook. It's amazing how much trash you can compact into one bag.

Mike
Didnt you have a counter top ice maker??? how well did it work & how much ice did it make?

I too have the I2 for about 8 years I have never had an issue and like mentioned I liked the fact that I could use any box. The controller is built into the box on the KVH and I didn't like that on the flip side the KVH is 12 volts so if you don't want to run a generator you may want to consider the KVH that is if your TV is 12 volts as well.

RE: 12v

You bring up a good point! I just looked at the spec sheet for the i3 and it say the ANTENNA CONTROL UNIT runs off of DC. If this is the case I still need the TV(s) to run. The boat has a good size invertor & I’ll look into having the TVs hooked up to it
Thx

My I2 runs on 12v as well but the generic boxes don't they need AC power but then so do my TV's. I just brought it up as something to keep in mind it may or may not be an issue at all. Best of luck with the project looks like you got a great boat enjoy!
