Lake Texoma Fire

Owner leaves his boat looking for a fire extinguisher? Folks on dock could not find one??? Scary.

Every boat in our marina/yacht club must have on board at least one fire extinguisher; ours has two plus an automatic system in the engine bay. Every dock has a large fire extinguisher in a bright red cabinet. Of course, every boat slip has a hose bib and hose attached. The fact that a boat owner had none and none could be quickly found on the dock in such a large marina is indicative of people neglecting the basics of safety. Every boat of any size and every marina are routinely checked and inspected by either the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Harbor Police, or the city fire department. The insurance claims and lawsuits will soon go into effect, but the season's been ruined for quite a few people. Thank goodness, no one was hurt or killed. Boats and docks can be replaced. New rules should be put into effect, and enforced, regarding fire safety on that lake and at every other marina. Hy

Update

"Sheriff's Department Incident Report that states an individual was working on one of the boats on Boathouse "U" trying to remove the water from the gas tank when the ground clamp from the electric pump fell from where it was grounded and arced on metal causing a spark and igniting the fumes. The individual was not an employee of Highport Marina, nor working for or at the direction of Highport Marina, but rather was working for an individual slip tenant on Boathouse "U". "

Supposedly from that fire, not my pic.

I'd love to store my boat under cover, but covered marinas really promote the spread of fire.

Spiders, fire, etc...don't care. The benefits of a covered slip FAR outweigh the random/rare chance of a fire - though I've seen them spread quite quickly in uncovered marinas too.

Spiders? More or less an non-issue if you marina is diligent about spraying.

No covered slips here in NY. Start of fire an accident; rapid spread due to lack of safety equipment. We had a marina fire (not our marina) a few months ago. Other boats were saved when the burning boat was cut free and pushed out into the channel. Hy
