This boat has ended up on our list of potential next boats. It looks like a great boat (only from internet searches, have not looked at any yet). Is there anything we should know about this boat, good, bad, indifferent? Best engines (diesel)? Known issues, things to look for during an inspection (water leaks, mechanical problems etc)?

Thanks

I have a 370 Sedan. You'll definitely want diesel engines with this size. I've seen several 40' Sedans and I think they're great.

The most important thing you can do with a 90's era (or any for that matter) boat is an engine survey.

I bought a '92 with low hours. It ran great during the sea trial. No apparent leaks, plenty of power, no smoke, etc. I skipped the engine survey, which turned out to be stupid.

I just had a major overhaul done on the starboard engine: 6 new cylinders, 1 sleeve, new trubo, new raw water pump(s), new exhaust elbow. Also needed heavy maintenance/valve ajustments and all injectors tuned, replaced ALL hoses, clamps and belts on both engines. Big bucks... big mistake for a noobie.

I still love it though... even though I weep over the initial cost to get the boat the way I want it.

Good luck in your search.

diesel is really a must have on a 40' sedan..
if you're looking at that style / size, take a look at the maxum 41 sedan, or even the 46 which are in the same price range as the 400SB.

nicer layout in my opinion as the galley is not buried down, larger windows, etc...

Look at the details and make your own opinion as to quality, I know that when i looked in 98 i was really impressed, the last 3 boats on my list back then were the 3700SCR, the 4100SCB and Regal 42. i kept the 3700scr for 6 years and had 0 issues with it (except for the merc. vee drives, like most aroudn that time). very well built boat.

100% diesel, not even considering gas.

My diesel comment was more geared towards what size diesel so as not to buy a diesel boat that is under powered.

Been looking at the 41 and 46 Maxum SCB, late 90's, early 2000s, on-line but honestly, we love the lines of the Sea Ray and like stairs to the bridge versus a ladder. Though we do plan to look at a Maxum 4600 as we have found one not too far away. It's the Limited Edition, priced quite a bit over our budget but worth a look.

No big Regals within 200 miles of here for sale but we like what we see on-line. It's Bayliner and Sea Ray country down here!

We looked at a 97 400SB this past weekend. Though we love the lines of the boat the interior feels crampy. We are not crazy about the raised dinette that gives you the mid cabin twin beds. Loved the forward stateroom, the bridge and the outdoor space but the cabin just felt crampy to us.

As far as your question regarding what size diesel, that boat was available with Cummins C's at 8.3ltr and 400-450HP - which is still below 1hp per CI - one of the best engines out there
It would be my choice of engine on a 40 footer

i have spent alot of time on a '98 sedan bridge, oddly enough never been for a ride in it as we alwasy end up anchored side by side.

the raise dinette is really wierd. other wise the layout to me, for a 40' seems reasonable. the owner does all of his own maintenance with out any issues...with the exception of the inpellar on the genny. he added an access panel below the aft bench seat to reach down to it.

him and his wife really love the boat, however it going up for sale in the next couple of weeks, he wants to downsize.

Well, if he wants to downsize to a 1995 330DA Sundancer give me a shout: gregarobinsonrb2@gr5tgmail.com

Greg,
Definitely check out the Maxum 46- it's a great sedan for it's size. We looked at a few up in chattanooga before we got our silverton. Lot's of boat for the $$.
If you weren't apposed to gas engines I'd say take a serious look at the Silverton 38...feels much bigger than any other 38-40' sedan I've ever been on.

I know of a real clean 2001 Diesel 400 Sedan Bridge in MD. I think we traded email on this but if you are still interested let me know and I'll set you up with a Captain you can show you the boat and MAYBE take you for a ride.

Surfside3 in Lindenhurst also has one on their lot. I thinks its a 2000 brokerage boat.

The nice part about the one in MD is that MM owns it so you can trade in a boat if you need to. Its the only one they own as far as I know because I had a customer who was waiting for a while until MM owned one he could trade against.

He didn't like a Bridge boat in the end but his wife loved the 400SB and both of them commented on how clean she was.
