Officials: Shipmates delay report of man overboard, search goes on

A search has been mounted for a man who fell off a fishing boat in the East Rockaway Inlet Thursday afternoon in an accident that wasn't reported until two to three hours later by his shipmates, the Coast Guard said.
Authorities were alerted just before 5:30 p.m. by one of the man's friends, said Frank St. Pierre, duty officer at the Connecticut-based Coast Guard station, which covers waters off Long Island's southern shores.
"He traveled all the way up to Crow's Nest Marina to report it," St. Pierre said. "It took him a while.."
The marina appears to be in Oceanside, miles east of the inlet, which separates Far Rockaway and southwestern Nassau from the barrier island where Atlantic Beach and Long Beach are located.
Nassau police, which dispatched its marine bureau, said it's not immediately clear why a radio was not used to report the incident, but there may have been a language barrier.
The Coast Guard, which has sent out several boats, has also dispatched a Falcon jet from its Cape Cod base to join the search. St. Pierre estimated it would take about half an hour for the jet to get to the inlet.
Other details about what happened were not available because the emergency and investigation was still unfolding.
Calls to the Crow's Nest Marina were not answered.
Hmmm, maybe Captain needed to sober up first!
