Do marine operators still exist? I see the VHF channels still are allocated to them.

This sent me down the internet rabbit hole!

VHF maritime ship-shore service appears to have been discontinued and the fequencies have been "re-purposed".

The regs are unclear ( te me, at least ) but the regs provide for VDSMS, an acronym signifying VHF radio to radio direct text messaging. THe channels also appear to allow for simplex voice.

The only reference to a radio capable of VDSMS operation that I could find is from Uniden.

See review of the product here:

There must be more info out there.

Sea Tow uses the marine operator channels for their automated radio checks. Go to their web site to see the channel for your area.
