I just received my 2-year vessel registration renewal form from DNR. Here's a sampling of what they're requiring information-wise now in order to apply for a "DNRid #" which is mandatory:

http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/service/getdnridcard.asp

Drivers License Number.
Social Security Number.
Height.
Weight.
Gender.
Ethnicity.

I'll be giving them a call to inform them I will not be giving them my SSN. They have no right to know it and no need for it. I do the same thing to the Maryland State Police when purchasing firearms and have yet to give it out or be denied.

I just read several of the pages associated with the link you posted and they are all geared for those wanting or getting hunting and fishing licenses. Since I do neither, I do not understand what the purpose of having me get this DNRiD is.

Just as a side note, they want us to get an ID for damn near everything except for voting. Maybe we should start claiming we are becoming disenfranchised.

Edit: Just found this. * Please note: Boat renewals cannot be processed online. The request for DNRid# relates only to the purchase of the fishing boat decal or a Park Passport or Pride donations.

So, why do they need my SSN to get a fishing sticker for my boat? Do they need to run a credit report to make sure my check is good before sending out my decal? Nope, not gonna happen.

Mike, I register my vessel for fishing with the PRFC (Potomac River Fisheries Commission.)

This bi-state regulatory agency's license is reciprocal in all Maryland and VA waters.(Bay and it's tributaries)
And, no need for SSN. Anytime I can bypass using MD's DNR for any application...I will.

I just called DNR. Before I could get a question out of my mouth the woman said: If you're filling out a boat renewal, you can leave the ID# blank this time"

So, no SSN required this year, but for 2016 there will be. I'm going to get my state representatives working on this. Mike, try your reps on the ES. They're probably not very much in favor of this sort in invasive crapola.

It is making the argument to move my boat to FL and leave it there better and better.

Update: I contacted my local Maryland representative, Justin Ready, who pretty much blew me off with a canned answer provided to him by DNR (I will not be donating to his campaign again!). So I took it to Congress, specifically to my Congressman, Dr. Andy Harris. His office (thank you, Heather) put the screws to DNR and got them to give up on requiring an SSN for boat registration renewals. So if you're due to renew, you DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE YOUR SSN!

I do find it interesting, though, that on the DNR website it states the reason as:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/service/compass_ssn.asp

"The federal Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 requires that states establish procedures under which the state has authority to withhold, suspend, or restrict the issuance and use of licenses when individuals have unresolved debt or other court actions related to paternity or child support proceedings."

Yet, in reply to my Congressman's request they stated in an e-mail something different:

"Collection of an individual vessel owner’s Social Security number used to be required by Coast Guard regulations governing the numbering of vessels. The Coast Guard regulations have been changed, and DNR is no longer collecting Social Security numbers from individual owners in connection with renewal of vessel registrations."

Does anybody ever remember giving DNR their SSN in the past? I sure don't.

I'm conversing with Tom Neale over this issue and need a copy of a Maryland Vessel Registration Renewal Letter. Does anybody have one that shows how the new "DNR ID#" is required? I should have copied mine but didn't before I sent it in.

A different topic but since we have the important folks here...

Though not a resident of MD I see your AG plans to run for governor. Isn't he the guy who created the fuss 3 years ago ramming through a bill it make the Chesapeake Bay a NDZ?

Ronbo

He tried, but failed. We destroyed him with facts. But, yes, that's the same AG and he is running for governor. He's not the DNC favorite and they've been working on destroying him in the press.
