Pretty mind boggling accident off Nassau a few days ago. Utopia survived with fairly minor bow damage but there are now thousands of gallons of gasoline on the bottom which hopefully will evaporate quickly when it escapes.

How do you not see a 160’ steel tanker on radar or how do you not see their lights. These small tankers are usually lit up with flood lights underway

That boat is going to be stuck in Nassau for a while pending investigation

Pretty hard to imagine how you'd miss something that big! Would the radar profile have been pretty small coming at it dead on from the stern? Regardless, there are nav lights that a helmsman should be looking for as well. Is the MY required to remain on scene and render aid? It's very fortunate that no lives were lost.

They stayed on scene and provided assistance along with the crew of another yacht who responded.

I ve run into many of these bahamian tankers at night... well not that literally... and Even from the stern the echo is pretty massive. They are also always very well lit with deck lights and flood lights.

It s also hard to imagine they didn’t have a FLIR camera on. Ours is always on at night on a 20” monitor.

The captain or whoever was at the helm has some explaining to do. Either fell asleep or maybe it was another Washington ferry smooching moment :)

Tropic Breeze serviced Marsh Harbour etc.. Not good for the Abacos. The owner/insurance company/et al, are going to get a rather hefty bill for that mistake.
