I've just bought a 2008 15 foot Boston Whaler Montauk with a 2007 Mercury 4-Stroke 60 hp engine on it. During test runs it would only run up to 4000rpm, top revs should be 5500 to 6000. However, out of gear it gets up to 6000 easily. I have heard these engines have a protection system included to protect the engine from extremes - it automatically went down to 2000 twice while running at 4000. Where can I find out more about this? I'm having trouble just finding a Mercury manual for this engine. I'm pretty sure it needs a new impellor - perhaps its slightly overheating?
