I'll be buying a new MS computer and would like to get all the charts I use for arm chair plotting. I have been using open captain and free USCG charts that I down loaded some years ago. It was a real PITA to select and down load zillions of charts. Most of my problems were probably because this is not something I do very often but I still would like something easier to load. Open captain has worked fine once I got it downloaded and connected to the charts.

Is there anything free today that is better than open captain with easy to download and associate charts?.
 
I use digi boat software with c-map charts which are read through a usbcc reader . the program is free but u pay for required charts.
 
Active captain is not nav software altbough the data can be found in many program

I stopped using a PC a couple of years ago and switch to ipad but for the last couple of years I switched from openCPN to Polar which ideally liked. Wasn't free but almost free at $50 Charts are free from NOAA. Better interface, better chart stitching and active captain data
 
looked up inavx and don't understand how it can work out of cell phone range?? or on an ipad
 
It doesn't talk to cell service.
It talks to satellites if you have a 3G iPad.
If you have a wifi iPad then you need to add a gps puck, I use the dual xgps150.
It works great.
More accurate than my ray junk and a lot easier to use.

Pascal was actually the one who originally recommended this to me.
I use it as my main gps.
 
Yeah, I tried downloading Active Captain to this Chromebook but it sent the download to my (android) cell phone. It also says in 'google play' that MX Mariner will work in my computer but I'm thinking it's reading my cellphone, just as the active captain download did. This Chromebook had me so frustrated, I had to walkaway.

Sounds like Ipad can use download Nav systems so I'll check out Ipad.
 
I bought the PC software from C-Map - haven't used it too much and i don't have anything to compare it to, but the interface seemed a little 'old'. I was able to transfer my waypoints, fish marks, routes from my plotter to my PC and back after I tweaked them, which was what I was looking to do, so it worked for me.
 
I'd vote for Polar Navy. I use it on my workstation for armchair planning and then load the routes on the netbook that I use on the boat. Chart download is easy and free. I got the tip on Polar Navy from Active Captain.

Navionics has a free app that is easy to use. has all the charts you need and works on your mobile devices as well. very handy as a back up system.
 
seems the app is free but charts are pay, correct??
 
I use a Garmin plotter and their (now) free HomePort program for route planning. The charts can be downloaded to an SD card and the card plugged into the PC.

This works well for me and after creating routes I can upload them to the plotter and just "follow the orange line".
 
Looked up XGPS150. My brain doesn't seem to absorb things like they should, but, seems like the XGPS is a GPS receiver much like the garmin 'puck', which I got.

What I'd really like is something that will show satellite views as in google earth but are Geo-synced.

Got an app called 'Live Earth View HD'. Most of these apps seem to work only on Android stuff.

WOW! Just got it to work on my cell. Got a pix of the satellite over the south Pacific. I thought it was traveling in a S/W direction but I think it going in a N/E direction. Sooo, I guess I just missed South East Australia. OOOO! OOOO! She's gonna be over N/E Hawaii in a sec. O Dang, she passed it as I was typing. Looks like she will be crossing western Washington in a few minutes.
