I have a Onan 6.5KW generator on a 1986 Bayliner 3250. Toward the end of last fall, the generator impeller went bad. When I replaced it, apparently some pieces of the old impeller had gotten in the water lines as the generator would start, but no water was being exhausted.
During the off season, I was able to clear out the water lines and start it up again.
It ran fine for several minutes, then began to run rough. I shut it off. When I tried to start it a few minutes later, it would not start. I have no been able to get it start since.
It turns over fine, but seems to act like it is not getting spark. It is getting fuel to the carb.
I changed out the plugs and condenser recently but that did not correct the problem.
The plugs and condenser are in a small box on the top of the generator. There is a wire attached to this box that appears to supply current to the points. I am getting a spark at that wire, but I never see a spark at the gap of the contacts.
The manual indicates that the timing can be adjusted by loosening the bolts holding the small box for the points and moving it backwards or forwards to advance or retard the timing. I marked the box before I removed it to replace the points, and believe it is back in exactly the same place.
If somehow I changed the timing, would that prevent a spark at the points or would that simply cause it to spark at the wrong time.
I have changed the points before using the same steps I used this time and had no problems.
Any ideas what I should check next?
