New Boating Law for New York State

I’m good with this. It doesn’t stop stupid but at least it gives the newbie some of the basics. I took this years ago with my wife and two young girls at the time as it was required for a jet ski.

We still have our NYS boating safety course completion cards. I have absolutely no concerns with this. As long as it covers ALL powered water craft I am ok with it. There should be no exceptions I don't care if it is a 5HP dink or a battery operated canoe.

Don't most states require this in some form or another?

I'll continue to take advantage of every exemption I can find before I give a state government a worn out nickel of my hard earned money for an additional "administrative requirement" to run my own damned boat.

I see that you can rent a boat without a license. The state must really be serious about safety! Not. Let's see, I who have been boating for 50 years will need a license but a non boater can rent and use a boat without one.

I have a couple of questions:

1) I see your NYS license can have an anchor....how do you get it? I assume you show your safety certificate to DMV?
2) I don't have a NYS certificate but I do have a Connecticut safe boater's card as well as a USCG approved course,,,,will these count?

My guess is any CG approved course would be acceptable in any state and again, I'm guessing that all states with boat safety class requirements would follow CG guidelines.

I might add that I have 2 buddies who teach the boating safety class, 1 for the Power Squadron and 1 for the CG Aux. They do a very nice job and while it certainly does not make anyone an expert boater, it does give a lot of basics and hopefully makes one a little more aware of being safe on the water.

Walshie -
Your are correct - AS Your USCG Auxiliary boating safety course is NASBLA approved, it counts in NYS. So bring a copy of your USCG Aux certificate to NYSDMV w/ your license, and they will add the anchor to your renewal (If you haven't gotten your new 'Enhanced' license yet, it would be a perfect time to do it.) You could do it between renewals, but it'll cost ya.

NASBLA approved courses would likely be reciprocal in most states unless there’s a money grab to be had. That is the biggest part of why I won’t do it. My full time job - my actual profession - is making “expert boaters”. 20 years in maritime SAR, I’ll be damned if I pay the state $20 to tell me I’m a safe boater. It’s a money grab, plain and simple.

Who knows. Maybe it will stop some stupid

Cuomo could give a damn less about boating safety, he just wants the $$.

This will do nothing to stop the nuts on the water just like Drivers licenses do nothing for safety. A nut is a nut.

If I remember correctly, I got my anchor put on my license online using the info from my boating certificate. Check the DMV website.
Pretty sure there was no charge to add the anchor.
