I have a 2001 Bayliner 185 with a 4.3l, 2bbl, Merc, bought new, but unfortunately sat in storage for three years with a cracked block (early freeze.) I finally got the money and the time to put a new long block, reusing all the original parts. It was a long weekend, but I got her back in the water on the 4th.
I was real happy when she started right up and ran great for about a half an hour - but then she stalled out. She started right back up and I ran her to about 2500 RPM where she ran fine for a few minutes, but started to stall again. I could keep her running by pulling the throttle back to idle and then increasing it. If I took it above 3000 RPM, she would continue to run strong, but below 3000, she kept wanting to stall. After adjusting the idle screw about a half turn, I could ride around at idle with no problem.
The problem seems to be that anywhere between just off idle ~1000RPM and 3000RPM the throttle cycles like a governor on a lawnmower. It'll drop to idle speed then increase back up to where the throttle's set - but it'll only stay there for a few seconds before it drops off again.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this?
