It's actually $34 a year, but you must be a member which is another $19 a year. I was already a member since I have BoatUS boat insurance. Still a lot cheaper than last year.
The last time I checked, it was nearly worthless in my home port of Ludington. All they would do is call the local authorities for you (USCG or sheriff) after contacting them. There is no commercial tow service in that area. Any "gratuity" paid to a good samaritan would not be reimbursible. My coverage through my insurance provides what I would consider to be enough coverage to handle any tow (I've been towed commercially twice so know the expense) and will reimburse for any towing fee so long as I get a receipt for the person who performed the service. I agree that TowBoat is a fantastic deal where coverage exists but falls flat in large areas around the Great lakes.
They call the "locals" here in central Lake Erie too. I think they may come but it is a long wait as they come out of Fairport habor. A lot of people out here have both boatus and the guy that works out of the Geneva State Park marina.
