Working on a carver with 220 crusader engines the port motor no longer starts get spark from coil but not throught the distributor, have replaced the ignightor, I know it's not the rotor or ballast resistor, next I plan on checking the tach wire to the helm, any other suggestions?

Not sure I can help with the ignition, but it sounds like you have too many negatives in your problem statement. The way it reads now, implication is that "no longer from coil" and "not through distributor" add up to simply No Spark at All, but that doesn't sound like what you're trying to say.
Please confirm what problem you're seeing, and include Year, Model, any other detail you have about the Crusader engines.

Since you mention the ballast resistor you apparently replaced a previous Pertronix Ignitor (I) with another of the same model which according to Pertronix is prone to burn out if the ignition key is left to On with engine off while testing. A better choice would probably be the Ignitor II which does not burn out that way, plus the pesky ballast is removed from the ignition circuit with the II. When the distributor is quite old and likely worn ( "nervous" tach needle), an even better (and more expensive) solution is a new Delco Voyager EST electronic distributor kit (see Michiganmotorz) with included matching coil and cables.

A shorted tach certainly can disable ignition , so you might well try just disconnecting the tach sender wire from the coil temporarily.

Make sure the center contact of the cap is intact to transfer pulse to the rotor and that no module wires are pinched by the cap.
