Fire Island National Seashore Prohibits Alcohol on Federal Lands Between Atlantique and Corneille Estates

Fire Island, New York – Effective August 1, 2014 - the National Park Service (NPS) will prohibit alcohol on federal lands located between the Town of Islip communities of Atlantique and Corneille Estates on Fire Island. The closure is due to visitor use impacts and is consistent with New York State and Town of Islip regulations enforced on adjacent town beaches.
The closure is established under the discretionary authority of the superintendent in accordance with Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations (36 CFR2.35).
With more than 500 visitors reportedly using these natural areas on weekends, impacts including the improper disposal of refuse and degradation of dunes and vegetation have become apparent. The NPS will use a progressive law enforcement approach to enforce the regulation.
Fire Island National Seashore encompasses 26 miles of ocean and bay shoreline, lush backdunes, maritime forests and residential communities on Fire Island, a barrier island situated south of Long Island, New York.
