Its my understanding that I'm A Suffolk county resident and I go boating in Suffolk county waters, I need a certificate. I obtained a certificate on-line and carry it with me when I'm out on the water.
I received a letter today from New York State which says "a new state law supersesedes a 2012 county boater education requirement that applied to all boaters. Now only thoses born after May 1, 1996, are required to possess a boating safety certificate"
If I understand this right, I no longer have to carry this certificate!
Am I right?

No you don't! Interesting fact - If you are ever stopped for an infraction (such as speeding within a 5 mile per hour zone), you will be asked for your drivers license. Don't supply it. Tell the officer that while you do have your boating certificate you left your drivers license in your car. My son gave the bay constible his drivers license and now his infraction is listed on his drivers license record of convictions for three (3) years. I'm hoping it won't affect his auto insurance rates. That they don't tell you when they ask for your drivers license.

I got the letter, went to the website, and for some reason they have me down as a Suffolk resident even though I live in Nassau. I guess some clerk in Albany decided to input me as a Suffolk resident when I they did my fishing license. It wouldn't let me correct it. Got frustrated, and gave up. They probably would have found a way to charge me for it anyway.
Now that you bring up the point about the tickets, I'm glad it didn't work for me.

I didn't think NY accepts on-line boating classes?
I think I recall reading that they plan to roll out this requirement by age group as they did for PWC and within a few years everyone will be required to have a boating license. Not sure where I read this but likely on this site somewhere.
