I'm trying to make a reservation for a week at Ocean Beach in June, not able to get through to the dockmaster. I've never been there before - anyone know how the reservation process works and any chance of me still getting a reservation in June? Any assistance/recommendations would be greatly appreciated - thanks

Unless things have changed, technically you are not allowed to sleep on your boat at the Ocean Beach Town Dock. We have done it in the past on the sly, but you need to keep your lights out on the boat at night, not hang out on the dock etc.

Randolph is one of the dockhands who has been around for a while, and is a nice workable guy, if you can somehow get to him. The boss in the office there last summer was Jill (a little tough), and the phone number was 631-583-5153, and fax # 631-583-7597. Good luck.
 
WTF??? Really glad I asked you guys. What a sh*tshow. I have to hide under my mattress and wear night vision goggles to go to the head??? I heard of this Land of No crap, but that is insane. Clearly I still have a lot to learn about the area.

I was planning to visit some friends who are staying at a house in Ocean Beach, and it looked like a nice place so I thought I would spend the week at the marina.

Is there another marina within walking distance I could stay at that so I could at least visit (the way you can walk to The Casino from Watch Hill)? Maybe Atlantique? I have a 14' beam 41' LOA.

Do people anchor offshore, or should I just consider Ocean Beach as a place for day trips, period?

you will probably fit into the B slips at atlantique, if not definately an A slip.its about a 1/2 hour walk to ocean beach from atlantique. if the marina is not full they wont be enforcing the residents rules.
 
I would try Flynn's in Ocean Bay Park. It's about a 20 minute walk, and they are pretty accommodating. We stay there several weekends each summer. The docking fees include meal credits. Unfortunately, the food is just fair, but you can also use the credits on drinks and t-shirts/hats, etc.

Flynns phone number is 631-583-5000. You can use the pool at the Fire Island Hotel about a block away while you are there. There is also a liquor store and a deli right there.

You can also try Seaview Marina, which is in the town between Ocean Beach and Ocean Bay Park (Seaview). However, they are really nasty, and I'm not sure if they allow transients at all any more, since the town took it over. Good luck.
 
Sorry-- after I posted, I noticed the 41' LOA note. Not sure if Flynn's can fit you inside. If you have to be outside the breakwater there, it is pretty bumpy. Make sure you ask that question. Seaview can definitely fit you if they are taking weekly transients.

Careful at OB overnight "The Land of NO". I know many who have overnighted and Randolph is a nice guy and $'s talk. So if you are there during the day you should have no problem staying.

But a bump in the night and the guy's from that very special little Police house will be seeking you out... Not nice.

I rather go there by Watertaxi from Atlantique or walk from Flynns. Also can walk from Atlantique. Good luck.
 
Thanks a lot guys - much appreciated. I'll be cruising down to Hewlett Point Yacht Club on Saturday to visit some friends - I'll check those places out on the way back.

Ocean beach is right next to a channel with fairly heavy traffic so there's no good place to anchor out.

I went to Ocean Beach with my boat for Memorial Day weekend about 11-12 years ago. Never had a desire to go back, too many dumb rules. We got in trouble for drinking water on the beach, we stopped for pizza for lunch and there was no legal place to eat it, the woman at the dock was a PITA, it was one thing after another...

A good place to stay if they are taking transients is Seaview. This time of year it is empty and they have all size slips.
Btw. Hewlett Point is our home canal. Perhaps we'll see you there on saturday. Green canvas 290 AJ.

Brad/John - Sounds like the KGB. Maybe I should just go to Iran instead. I promised some friends I'd hang out the weekend of June 20. Hope I don't wind up getting a cavity search.

Harris - I have a white Meridian 391 with blue canvas - 'Coconut Island' (I let my wife name the boat - I recommend this strategy). I'll be at HPYC all weekend. Look for a short fat Italian guy face down in the water...
