I have a 1993 330 Mariner with 350 Crusadres. I have an oil leak and was told even though it probably only needs a gasket, that there is no room to get to it so may have to pull the engine which would cost about $1200 in labor. Does that sound right? Is there any way to get to it? I certainly don't want to spend that kind of money. Fortunately the leak has not been that bad so have been keeping and changing oil pads, but sure would like to have it fixed.
Appreciate any input.

The leak appears to be coming from the valve cover on the outboard cylinder head on the starboard engine.

You don't need to pull the engine to change the valve cover gasket! Run from that mechanic as fast as you can. The rear cockpit deck comes out completely by removing 8-10 screws, the base legs of the ladder steps and disconnecting the scupper hoses-took me all of 30 mins. to accomplish. Once the deck is out, you have wonderful access to the engines-Carver paid attention to ease of service when they design their boats. I've had both engines R&R'd at different times, the starboard cost $500-10 years ago. The port engine cost $800 4 years ago. My starboard engine transmission seal let go which neccessitates pulling the engine to replace. If thats the case, $1200 for the entire repair might seem in line IMHO but you should be able to tell the difference between engine oil and tranny fluid.

Appreciate the reply - that is great news! I had no idea the deck can come out that easily. I bought the boat 3 years ago and didn't see anything in the documentation I got with the boat. In fairness to the mechanic, he is not actually a mechanic, does a lot of other work for me on the boat and said it was too big a job for him as it looked like the engine might need to be pulled.
