Hello all and happy boating!
I have a 1990 Four Winns 5.8L Cobra I/O with a shift problem that has me questioning my mechanical abilities. When the boat is at operating temp (muffs in the driveway will not duplicate this concern) and I attempt low speed docking, the shifter sticks in either forward or reverse (mostly forward) and I need to use two hands to disengage and go neutral (most time I get reverse casue I had to pull so hard). Inspection of cables, linkages, pivots, and all else looks great. There is no bind "entering" a gear with the shifter, just at "exit". While bound, if I switch the engine to off with pressure on the shifter it releases and goes neutral like it should. I suspect that I have an issue in the stern drive with either the clutch sleeve, shift rods / linkages, or something that someone can say from experience is the likely cause. It's not adjustment nor a main shift cable or shifter becasue these all work very free when disconnected.
Any clues?
