Only 2400 rpm max under wot and load

Another update-
Ran on flush ears on trailer...
Idles smoothly and easy. When i increase rpm 1500- spray from throttle bodies look similar and steady fuel pressure and normal, oil press is steady at 40, temp after running for minutes stabilizes at 170, charges at 14 v,
No alarms, but it seems to clatter or kind of knock- but not really a knock but only when idle is increased from 600rpm idle.
But Ive never run it on trailer with hatch open and never listened to it from behind boat on trailer.
It seemed to smoke slightly when reved up but motor reved strong without hesitation or stumbling.
Are the noises I describe normal?
I hate to bring it to river and find it still won't pull more than 2400 rpm

Do you have a timing light? If not, you can find them fairly cheaply at any auto parts store. I'd have a look at the timing and see if it is advancing properly when you throttle up. (You can check for this while on the flush muffs - just don't rev past 1200 RPM for more than a few seconds.)

If timing looks good, I'd pull all the plugs and do a compression check to rule out any serious problems first. (You mentioned a knock in your first post which could be nothing or could be very bad depending on how loud and where it was...) Note that if your compression is good then it's got to be either fuel or ignition related.
