Ouch!!

One would think an anchor w/b considered before closing in on jetty ?

I wonder why that police boat didn't put a line across.

This was discussed a while ago on yacht forums including some guys familiar with this Italian harbor... Waters were shallow enough to anchor, and at least slow the drift, but the harbor also has a number of tow boats and rescue services.

How authorities could just stand by and do nothing is mind boggling.

Bob, I believe I saw two fellows up on the bow trying. Scared people often can't get anything to work right.

It's hard to believe someone would put themselves at such risk, but there is the possibility that it was done on purpose. One dies of cardiac arrest and that was surely not thought of as a possibility. As for others watching it happen without towing out to safety, I read an article where someone's house burnt to the ground and the local fire dept watched it from the street. This was in the USA and the town had a mandatory yearly fee that was not paid. I wonder if this could have been a similar situation.

They lost both engines leaving the harbor in rough conditions. Italian CG tried to set up a tow but failed. Skipper died, passengers were rescued. L
Boat was ground to pieces on the jetty

This incident raised a number of good what if scenarios that are worth considering:

Can you manually deploy your anchor in rough conditions in case your electrical system is out? Do you know how to manual release the windlass clutch and can you find the wrench ?

Do you have a line long enough and strong enough to your boat in these conditions? Apparently the CG small boAt didn't, maybe if they had one in their anchor locker the boat would have been saved.

A person can't know how bad that can be until you are in it, and the one responsible to get 'us' out of it.
I got stuck like that in Sequi Washington, right on the Rocks.
Before it was all over I felt like throwing all my passengers overboard so I could get my work done.
