Dreary February night in upstate NY. Daughter is in Mexico on spring break and wife is sleeping. I'm in family room drinking a beer, Fox News on tv, and fire in fireplace. Bored to say the least. Open up bill pay software to pay heating oil bill. Bored so I click on reporting function and notice that I have been using different versions of banking software since 2005.

I run payments made by category for “all dates". I shouldn't be surprised but the number that appeared under “boat expense" since 2005 was bigger than the value of my house, more than a year of my current income, and enough to delete the softwares history in case my wife ever looked at it.

After some thought, I've decided that it was worth every penny! Boating has defined who we are as a family for the last 23 years. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

That's why I don't track it in any way! I made the mistake once a few years ago and contemplated getting out of boating.

So what? You enjoyed it and perhaps created memories.

Same old story. . . Spent all my money on wine, women and song (while boating). . . the rest I just wasted.
