So, I just got the county's supplemental tax bills for personal property. One is for the houseboat, but the other is for the slip we rent. Evidently when you have exclusive right to a piece of government-owned property (the lake) this type of tax can kick in. Who knew? The bill is for $121, so it's not onerous, but I was surprised I could be taxed on something I rent. Do others pay tax on their slips on gov't-owned lakes?

(Save the usual BS about "Taxifornia" and "Kommiefornia". They're old and tiresome and not at all clever.)

I rent a slip on lake powell and have never been taxed for it.

I like californication :)

I think you answered your own question in your last paragraph…

Every Marina pays Property Tax and the cost is baked into your slip fees. Maybe County owned Marina doesn't pay taxes, so it is sent out to you as a specific bill?

Counties impose personal property tax onto the property tax bill. Prop 13 stabilized property taxes, to a point, in '78. Boats have always been "in addition" and I've paid them for every boat I've owned. I don't own the slip, though, so it's just weird. "Posessory Interest" isn't just a California thing, though, so I'm curious about other states.

This marina is leased or permitted by the USFS, as is my houseboat. The tax is a separate fee, to me, based on where the boat is located. I assume the USFS secures fees from the marina, but I doubt the county does.
