Friend just bought a new to him 1992 Sumerset. Both toilets are having issues. One is completly dead and one keeps flushing. I am familiar with troubleshooting the problems(having previously been educated by you) but other than the raw water pumps what is the parts availabilty on the A12's. Looks like they are original equipment.I will be looking them over this weekend and wanted to have some options. This was the Atlanta Showboat in 1992.Thanks

Hi Rick,

Other than the raw water pumps having been discontinued, nearly everything else remains available for those heads (or substitutes that will work in place of the original parts).

On the head that is completely dead, will the discharge pump run when he pulls the flush lever forward (toward him) and holds it? On those old units, when you pulled the handle towards you and held it, the timer board and the fuses were bypassed, and power was sent directly to the discharge pump motor. If it will run that way, there's hope for it. If it won't, he'd be better off getting a whole new toilet. Taking it apart and replacing the discharge pump motor requires disassembling the entire head, and is very labor-intensive. Considering that the head is old enough to vote, it really wouldn't pay.

On the one that keeps flushing over and over, that's usually caused by a "sticking relay." On the back of the unit, directly beneath the intake pump, are two solenoid relays, stacked together.

Take a hammer handle or the back end of a screw driver, and give them a good, sound whack! That should cause them to release, and stop the toilet from flushing over and over. Sometimes that's all that needs to be done. But if there isn't too much corrosion in that area, your best bet there, would be to replace both of them, they're both the same - Raritan part # AM06012, approx. $50 each.

Thanks Vic.. I will be getting down and dirty with them on Saturday and putting together a parts order for the owner...

Update: Got both of them out in the open and this is what I found.
#1 This one was not doing anything. Nut on flush handle had worked loose on the inside and was not letting it contact microswitch on card to start sequence. Also pine straw in ball check valve. Working now....

#2 Continuous flush once started. Microswitch on card sticking in closed position once depressed. Cleaned up switch and operated many times with power off. Also pine straw in ball check valve. Working now....

Neither one of these toilets had any type of strainer on the raw water side.

Hope this may be of use to others trouble shooting these types of problems.

Thanks Vic.

Hi Rick, glad it wasn't anything serious. Sounds like strainers on the intake lines are in order.

Check out these: http://www.raritaneng.com/products/accessories/in-line_strainer.html

Boatfix has 'em for $35.50 (30% off of retail):

Everybody else: both of those heads had problems that couldn't be easily foreseen when trying to troubleshoot from a distance. I try to use logic and personal experience with the likely things that sometimes go wrong, particularly with heads as old as these (they date back to the early '90's and are a few generations behind what is presently being offered - unbelievable as it might seem, 1990 was 21 years ago!) But there are times when the only solution is to pull it out and actually take a look inside.
