The existing Motorola 8RG 2035A alternators attached to Crusader/Thermal Electron 454's aren't charging adequately. Less than 13 volts at idle, diminishing as rpms go up.

Both alt doing this. I know they're old, but now I wonder if the HEI distributors are too much for them. Is this possible?

I tried to find out the amp rating for old alternators, but no luck. I'm guessing 37 to 55?

Thoughts?

How are the Batteries? Less than 13 volts at idle, diminishing as rpms go up is not a good sign! I did a quick search and only found that it uses a M5-207A regulator.

The port battery was tested- 2 dead cells. It was replaced. The volt gauge for the stbd gauge showed only 12 volts while running at 1200 rpms, down from the usual 13 or 14. Replaced it too, a week later.

Good info, thanks Jim.
