Going to do the air show this year at Quonset point. Since I've never anchored at Quonset point can anyone give me some tips on the best location once I get there?

I went last year on two different days. One day I was off the "car piers" about 200 yds and enjoyed it. The second day I was closer to Quonset at the edge of the channel. It was a lot rougher there. IN any case, put out lots of scope. There will be people dragging anchor and not paying attention. It's kind fo a C_F_ but worth it for the awesome view of the air show you get. The second day we had two boats tied together. Our anchors were out quite a ways and I backed down to my friends boat until we coudl tie up. With the two anchors helping hold we didn't budge, we did watch a 40+ Sea Ray drift right across my bow. I think he had about 45' of anchor line out in 25feet of water. DOH.

Do yourself a favor and head right into Allens Harbor. You'll be on the back side of the runways but the show will still happen right over your head. You may miss some ground things that take place out front but you'll be able to sit on the hook in glass flat water and enjoy the show without worrying about someone dragging into you.

If you're only gonna have one boat(no rafting allowed) the town actually does have (the last I knew) some rental mooring in Allens Harbor. Last time I used one they were $5 for the day.

tmal2, thanks. I had to look up Allens Harbor cause I wasn't sure where it was. I assume you mean pull into the inner harbor area through the channel and anchor/moore inside? Looks nice, I wonder if it will fill up. I will have company onboard and would like a nice quiet spot to watch the show.

Is there anything on shore via tender over there? place to eat, walk, etc. ... Maybe I'll check it out next weekend.

Tim, What size boat do you have? Allen's harbor can be tricky to get into with a bigger boat. The channel is very narrow and winding but there is plenty of water if you stay in the middle or to the right side entering.

Once you enter the harbor you'll want to head through the mooring field and towards the Northeast corner of the harbor. (circled in red in picture).
You can drop the hook back there and the holding is great. There is not a lot of space there to anchor and it will fill up so I suggest getting there as early as possible.

If you have your own tender you can go to shore to stretch your legs but there is really nothing to do there.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

lol, bigger boat? This is, of course, a very subjective thing. I have a loa 40' and draft 4.5' Is that too big for the spot you highlighted above? If I didn't anchor in Allen Harbor what would be your next recommendation? Thanks for all the info. Looking forward to some good weather and a day on the water!

I keep my boat in Allens Harbor. It can be difficult to get into at low tide (honestly, I see at least one boat go aground getting in there every weekend in the summer).

It does fill up quick, but it is very calm in there and generally everybody respects everybody else.

Your boat is not too big nor does it draft too much, but be very careful and watch the tides.

As for land based things to do - NOTHING.

I will be there this weekend and will have a car and if you need a ride for anything (read food or bear) hail me - "Chaser".

PM me if you want my number.

It's been a LOT of years so take this FWIW. The anchorage for the air show was very well marked. It kept you out of the danger zone but well in view of the show. We were parallel to the runway and could see the ground show with binoculars. The air show was so close you could swear it was in your boat. You will enjoy it. Have a good time.
