Refilling fresh water cooling system

Hey all,
Hoping to finish up the manifold job tonight finally, lots of delays both parts wise and life getting in the way.
Can I refill only through the heat exchanger, or do I have to pull the main hose off the circulating pump to get antifreeze back into the block?
 
No info about the engine however you usually fill through the "radiator cap" whenever it is located. Fill and wait for air to release then fill again. After that stops working run the engine to open the thermostat and burp the system then fill some more. After some running see if more coolant is needed to top it off.
 
what Bruce said. When you think it's full, start it up with the cap off to release any trapped air and add as needed.
 
It is a 1988 crusader 454 with fresh water cooled block and manifolds. The block is pretty much empty right now, just wanted to be sure it will fill by just putting the coolant into the heat exchanger. Just finishing up a complete exhaust replacement, will be ready to run it tomorrow morning.
 
I haven't tried to fill my 454 Crusaders thru the HE. I pour antifreeze thru the filler neck and run them at idle with the pressure caps off.
 
Fill it through the neck, should be a bleeder valve to bleed out the air. Open the bleed valve until anti-freeze comes out. If no bleed valve, fill it up, run it then refill until the air works out. Since the HE hooks to the record pump, and sits higher than the pump, antifreeze will make into the block easily.
 
Refilling was way easier than I was expecting, must have taken in 4 gallons before even starting up.
Sealing all the bolts from dripping, way more difficult than expected...
 
Which bolts were those?

I've never had any dripping but with my full FWC engines I only replace elbow/risers. Did you deck the iron mating surfaces or not bother making them flat? I can't recall, was there some reason you really needed to replace your FWC engine ex. manifolds too?

As remaining retained air is purged the next couple runs or so, it will likely accept more A/F to properly top up and keep temps down.

Were overflow/recovery reservoirs ever added to your cooling systems? I don't believe your '88 Crusaders had them OEM ( my old '88 5.7L's didn't until I added them) but they save a lot of A/F, refilling and bilge mess, and are only ~~ <$10 including mount and hose at auto parts stores as I recall .
 
You want to get as much old AF out of the block as possible. Of course, drain the hoses. On both sides of the block, just above the oil pan, about 2/3 the way back, there should be a drain plug or drain fitting. If it's plastic, replace with one of those 'winged' brass drain fittings( or similar). All you really need is a 1/8"( or 1/4") brass pipe plug. Get the kind with an Allen wrench fitting.

The whole exhaust system on this boat was original, had never been changed. The manifolds looked very rusty underneath, and I thought I saw some smoke coming out of the manifold at the first spring start up. It turns out is may have been coming from a loose block drain plug on that side, it was barely hanging on by one thread, the block was wet there, and it came of with a turn of my fingers. All the seams of risers and elbows are full of rust. So it looked like time for complete replacement. I have only done one engine at this time, and may wait until fall to do the other.
So the parts I bought were all sierra, came painted on all surfaces. I sanded the paint with 120 grit paper on a random orbital, they looked nice after. The long studs coming off the manifold to the risers were dripping very slowly at first, one or two per side of engine. Also was getting a slow drip or two on the elbow bolts. Redid the gaskets again after that with similar results.
Gave up, took for a 20 min ride at 1400 rpm, spent overnight, came back, went home and then went back today. Torqued all bolts again, started up and ran to temp, and all seemed to seal up. Did not see any dripping from any places today!
I do not have those overflow reservoirs, that does sound like a good idea to add.
